little pic Curio vol. 2 out now! Posted on May 4th, 2012
This is the latest and greatest of my comics. This is the Galactic Romance issue! You can learn more or order it through Paypal here, and I'm also newly being distributed by Birdcage Bottom Books! I recommend checking them out if you want to order small press comics by a bunch of different neat artists all in one go.

little pic Seriously, just get on my Tumblr. Posted on October 25th, 2012

Hey y'all. Ci Vediamo has been printed, it's beautiful, and I'm making loads of new comics all the time! But this site is difficult to update, so it's all going on my Tumblr: newlevant.tumblr.com

little pic I just won a Xeric for Ci Vediamo! Posted on July 5th, 2012

Hi everyone! My mini-comic, Ci Vediamo, just won a Xeric Grant! The Xeric Foundation has been awarding grants for up-and-coming cartoonists to self-publish their work since 1992. They are now changing their focus, so this was the last ever round of self-publishing grants!

"Ci Vediamo" is an Italian goodbye. Literally, it means "We'll see each other." Ci Vediamo the mini-comic is a wordless story of love, loss and moving on. The comic uses overlapping vellum pages to tell the story, and vellum is a pain to print in a copier, so I'm particularly glad to have support in publishing this comic. I've been working with my friend Charles at Eberhardt Press on the printing, and it should be done by the end of July.

Here's an example of the vellum paper:

little pic New mini-comic, Curio, out now! Posted on May 4th, 2012
I just sewed the last binding on my new mini-comic, and I'm releasing it into the world! It's the first issue of Curio, dedicated to stories about some of my favorite topics: pharmaceutical, sexual, and formal experimentation. Basically, instead of naming every new self-anthology mini-comic something different (e.i. Chili Dog Dad, Hazel Is White), I will start releasing stuff as different issues of Curio. That way, people will know to look for a certain title. Check out the full list of included comics (and purchase it via Paypal, if you want) here.

little pic Now I have a Tumblr Posted on March 18th, 2012
I'll be keeping this site up-to-date as a portfolio and center for selling my mini-comics online, but the Tumblr will be updated more frequently and contain sketches, jam comics, and other curios, as well as finished art. I'll also put news about my projects, conventions I'll be attending, and just a smidgen of personal blogging there. Another good thing is that you can follow it, so you'll automatically find out about updates without having to check back (unlike this site.)
Why wait? Go now. newlevant.tumblr.com
little pic I'll be at the Brooklyn Zine Fest and Stumptown Comics Fest! posted on February 20th, 2012
That's right, I'm excited to be sharing a table with the wonderful Robin Enrico at the Brooklyn Zine Fest on April 15th. They even posted a Meet Your Zine Maker interview with us on their blog! Robin talks about Johnny Applezine and the research behind his comics, and I reveal the secrets of Beck.

At the Stumptown Comics Fest on April 28th and 29th, I'll be sharing a table with the lovely Matthew Bogart and William Coker. I'll have new stuff available at the fests: a "fun pack" of foldable mini-comics that I haven't posted online, and a longer collection of the cool comics I've been doing at SVA.

Here's the latest and greatest:

little pic Latest comics from SVA, and I have a sales rep posted on October 25th, 2011
The wonderful Tony Shenton is now representing my comics, so contact him if you're a store interested in placing an order. SVA is doing the typical art school thing of making me constantly productive, which is awesome! Several of my latest projects have been print-only mini-comics, but here are a few that present nicely in a digital format. The first one's a true story of my exciting life in New York:

Nice Girl, Wrong Place p.1

Nice Girl, Wrong Place p.3

For another assignment, I tried my hand at gag panels!

little pic Moved to New York, attending SVA! posted on August 30th, 2011
My latest professional and personal update is that I've moved to Manhattan, where I'll be attending the School of Visual Arts, majoring in Cartooning! Classes start next week, and I really couldn't be more excited. Drop me a line if you're in town during the school year (as I expect to be back in Portland for the summer), and I plan to attend and maybe table at local conventions such as SPX and the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival. I'll keep the website up-to-date with my latest artistic endeavors and travels, so stay tuned!

little pic People of Coloring Book Exhibit and Release Party, Thursday July 7th posted on June 27th, 2011
Wow, so I finished up my coloring book project (printed yesterday), and I'm having a release party!

Time: Thursday, July 7th, 6:00pm-9:00pm
Location: Reading Frenzy, 921 SW Oak St, Portland OR
More Description: Who are these people, and what are they famous for? (If you don't know, ask your parents or teachers.) Now you can make them any color you want! People of Coloring Book is a sincere joke, spoofing the well-intentioned yet hopelessly misguided children's books of yore and the collective awkwardness of our "colorblind" society. Its covert aim is to make you think about the role race plays in identity, but the answers are left for you to color in.

Reading Frenzy will be celebrating the release of People of Coloring Book in their typically kid-friendly fashion with free Ninkasi beer, and creator Hazel Newlevant will draw an instant portrait of you, thus immortalizing your own identity. Original illustrations from the Coloring Book will be on display at Reading Frenzy through the month of July.

While I was at it with updating the site, I added some other important stuff: photos of Ci Vediamo , and you can now buy it online via PayPal.

And here's another new strip (my first done with watercolors):
Monogamy

The last small change I made was to sort Other Comics and Illustrations from newest to oldest, in the hopes of encouraging people to look at the good stuff first!

little pic New mini-comic, Ci Vediamo, just finished! posted on April 12th, 2011
Hello world! I recently enrolled in the IPRC's fabulous comics certificate program. Just in time for the Stumptown Comics Fest, I've finished a new mini-comic called Ci Vediamo. This has cool experimental stuff like transparent pages, so it doesn't really work to scan it, but I've posted a few preview photos on Facebook and will try to upload some to the website proper soon. Anyhow, it really demands to be viewed in person! It'll be available for sale this weekend at the IPRC's table at Stumptown, and post-Stumptown, I'll work on distributing to comic shops and making it available online.

Also, I recently did a comic for the OTHER Stumptown (the zine, not the convention), which will be appearing in their Breakup issue soon-ish. Check it out:

I bet you know someone rad who would enjoy these as a Christmas/Birthday/Whatever gift.

little pic Contribute to the SADNESS ZINE! posted on October 1st, 2010
I've decided to edit an anthology of SADNESS, and I'm hoping for artistic contributions from some of the lovely creative people I know. Be it genuinely sad, hilariously sad, or both; comics, drawings, photos, poetry, stories –– however you prefer to express your inner angst!

Format: 5.5 x 8.5, black & white, 200dpi or higher for images. I have a scanner and tablet, so if you don't, I can scan and edit stuff for you. Text submissions, you can format or hand-write yourself, or I'd be happy to format them for you.

Deadline: December 1st

Send it to: hazel@newlevant.com
Please also send the title of the piece, and the URL of any website/blog which you'd like me to include in the zine credits.

What you get: At least one free copy! I don't know how successful this will be, but if it pays for itself and I'm able to do multiple printings, I will try to give you more. Also, your name and website or business information.
